Are you a happy couple or an unhappy one but you are in love.Pick up some Tips for Building a life lasting Relationship

Ankur and Meeta have been married for  a number  of years now . They seem to have been having serious thoughts on their relationship already. The couple have been  staying with and without each other quite frequently in all these four years . One small tiff and the bags get packed . Meeta gets back to her mother’s house, or if she does not go out then it’s Ankur who would shift to the separate bedroom at the first floor of the house.  The accusations and blames keep them apart for a few months, till one of them apologizes. They come together and the honeymoon begins again .  Ankur’s mother has by now adjusted to their frequent bouts, as it has become a routine affair. Meeta wants Ankur should be dynamic in today’s competitive world and drop his laid back attitude .She would like him to move fast in his career ,and match the dynamism, she feels she is equipped with. For Ankur, the priorities are his family, his ailing mother who needs him and hence he feels satisfied with his progress.

couplesSomewhat similar  story has been going on between Bhuvan and Anita .Their 16 years of marriage has come to a stand still with both virtually accusing each other of neglect and  oppression .Anita blames Bhuvan of having neglected her  for  all their   marriage period. She feels she could have done better if she had adopted a career so that she could get away from the demands of married life. Bhuvan on the other hand feels oppressed, saying, ” She has been a very demanding wife and does not allow me to breathe freely .I need space of my own now”. he continues, ” from the day we began dating each other she has been like this always”.

But does it happen only after marriage. Not necessarily . Ashy and Neelu end up quarreling  on every date even though they would be making up soon. The new  issue would come at the next date .  For them ,it is wonderful feeling to be in love and date each other. The couple meets for awhile and then pine for each other till they meet at the next date.

images (6)While dating prior to the commitment made to each other for a long term relationship, everything is seen by the lovers  from behind the rosy shades of love and affection for each other. The emotions of possessiveness and yearning do not   allow the lovers to think of and bring in the mundane communication of a daily grinds of life.

It is definitely fine for short term love / date experiments .But being in a long-term relationship isn’t merely pining for the lover’s physical proximity and  intimacy alone. Being in long term relationships will involve managing and taking care of many other lives in addition to the lives of the lovers. And it is not an easy task.  Both people need to accommodate themselves to new family atmosphere and new relationships in their lives ( which come into their lives as an inheritance of marrying each other)  . May be a few years later  they will have to raise their own children  to make their family a complete unit.

The lovers need to  then communicate over many other issues in addition to the romance and love in marriage. The issues that gain priority over love may pertain to jobs and careers, money and household expense, household work and taking care of the babies, social, cultural and religious affairs, parenting and in many cases taking care of the aged and old in the families.

coupleAs a couple begins their journey into the long-term relationship of wedded bliss, their love for each other many a times may take a back seat and the love gets reduced to a few stolen kisses and quickies here and there. The couple forgets about nurturing and keeping the flame of love and desire for each other alive. Soon the infatuation of physical hunger wears off and then the focus shifts from the affection to the problems.

photo-1526736054478-78a346854f1bThe stark realities of need for more money, career priorities and of culture, of religion, and of family may cause concerns and small squabbles. Before these squabbles get blown into major issues and a beautiful relationship begins to disintegrate. The couple needs to understand that every relationship is important in life and more so with the one with whom you have to spend your life time.

Needless to say, that every difference and misunderstanding should be treated as worth working for and saving, once the infatuation begins to fade.

photo-1484660073876-32a014c54b24Communication in person and not on the social media , is the only tool and doorway to establish a better understanding. The couple, need to take  up all those problems that are causing strangled relationship .It is always good to keep the bedroom stories confined to  four walls of the personal  bedrooms .But should the couple  feel  they are  not able to communicate with each other without raising voices and angers , they should get the professional advise of the family  therapist and relationship  counselor.  The  airing of grievances in the family sitting room can aggravate the problems and cut down the love quotient. Isn’t it a fact that the love still exists, we just have to bring it to the fore again.

Proven Tips for a Lifelong, Loving Relationship

It is a wonderful feeling to be in love and dating. During the early stages of dating, couples often feel excitement and anticipation, waiting eagerly for their next meeting. Everything is seen through the rosy lens of romance, with affection and passion at the forefront. During this honeymoon phase, couples are less likely to encounter the daily challenges that come with long-term commitment.

Challenges in Long-Term Relationships

However, being in a long-term relationship is not just about physical intimacy or romance. Lasting relationships require managing responsibilities together, such as:

  • Adjusting to new family dynamics
  • Building a family unit
  • Managing jobs and careers
  • Sharing household expenses
  • Dividing household chores
  • Taking care of children
  • Participating in social, cultural, and religious affairs
  • Supporting elderly family members

Over time, happy couples realize that communication is the foundation of a successful partnership. As responsibilities grow, partners may find that romance sometimes fades into the background. Small disagreements about money, work, family obligations, or cultural differences can become frequent, and if not addressed, may escalate into bigger problems.

How to Nurture a Loving Relationship

Maintaining the flame of love in a long-term relationship takes effort and intention. Here are some proven relationship advice tips to keep your connection strong:

  • Prioritize Communication: Regular, honest conversations help address issues before they grow.
  • Value Each Other: Treat every misunderstanding as an opportunity to grow together.
  • Keep the Romance Alive: Make time for small gestures of affection to strengthen your bond.
  • Share Responsibilities: Work as a team in managing life’s challenges.

Building a Lifelong Connection

The key to transforming an unhappy couple into a happy couple is understanding that every relationship requires work, patience, and empathy. Remember: the most important relationship in your life deserves your time and attention. By addressing problems early and communicating openly, your relationship can thrive for years to come.

By putting in the work, prioritizing one another, and tackling problems as a team, couples can create a supportive partnership that grows stronger over time. Remember, true happiness in a relationship isn’t about avoiding difficulties, but about growing together through them. With the right mindset and these proven relationship tips, you can build a loving, lifelong bond that stands the test of time.

A Guide to Understanding Couples Therapy

In many societies, the mere mention of seeking help from a psychiatrist or psychologist can evoke a plethora of taboos, fears, and stigmas. But what about the journey of couples who dare to seek assistance from a family therapist?

In this blog post, we will talk about the challenges couples face in accessing therapy, the signs indicating the need for professional help, and the process of couples therapy itself.

Breaking the Taboo: Accessing Couples Therapy

Picture this: a couple caught in a whirlwind of disagreements and disputes, yet hesitating to seek professional help. Why? Because in their society, approaching a therapist carries the weight of stigma. It’s seen as a step towards airing complaints against one’s partner, a move laden with fear of judgment from family and friends. So, instead of seeking support, many couples choose to suffer in silence.

The reluctance to access therapy stems from the pervasive belief of “What would people say?” Couples fear the repercussions of disclosing their marital problems to their social circles, preferring to keep their struggles hidden. But as we’ll explore, recognizing the need for therapy is the first step towards healing a fractured relationship.

Recognizing the Signs: When to Seek Help

When is it time to reach out to a family therapist? The signs are subtle yet significant. When communication devolves into constant irritation and arguments, when love dwindles, and acceptance wanes day by day, it’s time to pause and reflect. Resentment towards one’s partner or a loss of interest in shared activities are red flags signaling the need for professional intervention.

Yet, despite these signs, many couples hesitate to take the plunge. The fear of judgment, coupled with societal pressure to maintain appearances, acts as a barrier to seeking help. However, it’s essential to recognize that seeking therapy is not a sign of weakness but a courageous step towards rebuilding a fractured relationship.

The Therapeutic Journey: What to Expect

So, what does the process of couples therapy entail? It begins with an introductory session where the therapist delves into the couple’s issues, family dynamics, and communication patterns. This initial assessment provides a foundation for deeper exploration in subsequent sessions.

Contrary to popular belief, therapists do not serve as judges or mediators. Instead, they act as facilitators, guiding couples towards understanding and resolving their conflicts. Topics explored in therapy sessions range from in-law relationships and household responsibilities to communication patterns and sexual dynamics.

A skilled therapist helps couples gain new perspectives on their relationship dynamics over sessions spanning several months. Through open communication and negotiation, couples gradually rebuild trust and acceptance within their relationship.

Overcoming Stigma: The Importance of Seeking Help

In societies where seeking therapy is stigmatized, breaking the silence surrounding mental health is crucial. By sharing their experiences and seeking support, couples can challenge societal norms and pave the way for others to access the help they need.

It’s time to destigmatize therapy and recognize it as a valuable resource for couples facing challenges in their relationship. Seeking help is not a sign of weakness but a courageous step towards healing and growth.

Conclusion: Empowering Couples to Seek Help

In a society where stigma surrounds mental health, accessing couples therapy can feel like an uphill battle. Yet, by recognizing the signs and overcoming the fear of judgment, couples can embark on a journey towards healing and growth.

Through open communication, negotiation, and the guidance of a skilled therapist, couples can rebuild trust and acceptance within their relationship. It’s time to break the silence surrounding therapy and empower couples to seek the help they need to thrive.

Spending Couple Time together during Covid 19 Lockdown, free from violence .

domestic violence 1Latest report from my city reads,”cases of domestic violence on the rise, 30 cases reported in last two weeks of corona lockdown”. My city may not be the only one to report that. Family and couples disputes, domestic squabbles and arguments have definitely been on the rise and there have been regular incidents of physical violence taking place among some of the couple’s.

It’s true that during the corona pandemic every individual is struggling with the apparent problems of feeling stressed and suffocated on account of many restrictions being imposed on his or her free movement .But it is applicable to all countries across the world .The world needs to save its humans from the deadly clutches of coronavirus. During such crisis we all feel insecure, scared and lonely whether staying alone or living with family. But those of us who are with the families should be happy that they have the feel of human and that too of a family member around them. Just think of the millions who are locked up alone within their single dwellings, hostels or outside on the roads.

There are many among us who feel  lonely despite the fact that they are living with their spouses, partners and their families .These people are not only lonely, they also seem to generate tension, negativity and resentment in their minds and behavior. Is that the reason for the domestic complaints and violence going up and if so what should we be doing to contain violent outbursts in our day to day survival. Let’s understand what has been happening.

  1.  Why is the connection missing?

argu cplWe need to explore within ourselves. We have always been complaining of not giving enough time to our families, spouse, and children and have wished we could find time for them. Now that we have so much time, why is the connectivity missing. Was it on account of the fact that you both have been leading a life different from each other even though married and couldn’t develop much connection? The average time a couple spends with each other on normal times have been no more than 4 to five hours in a day’s time. When you take away the time contribution to other daily routines of life e g. dropping kids at school, going for kitchen shopping, working in the office and the commute time deducted from the awake time of 16 to eighteen hours after six hours of sleep time. Many of us have been putting off a family holiday on account of kids’ education, lack of finances, the difficult boss or just being too committed to responsibility at work place. The much needed connection between us could never be established in all these years hence now it appears too late to do that. But trust it, now is the only time to find that connectivity,

Are we falling for the perception bias?

emotional abuse 2We all form perception based on our cognitive assessment of the person’s’ behavior and our relationship experience with the person. Such a perception bias is a little difficult to go away .It becomes the unbreakable thread of our future dealing with the people. Such perceptive bias can be either be positive or it can be negative too. Your spouse’s behavior in normal times could have helped you form such a cognitive bias towards him or her .for example one cognitive bias could be, “my husband doesn’t contribute anything towards household work”. This becomes a pattern of thought during normal times and even when he does try to extend some help in this area you would have told him,” it’s not your job. Let me handle it you go and watch T.V.”.It could have been okay during normal time to do so but now when the household help is away, the same cognitive bias has become a source of irritation for you, when you notice him enjoying in bedroom and you slog in the kitchen.

main-qimg-fb5d01aa8cb68a295113832883654288There can be many such perception biases between the spouses, amongst other family members on account of earlier events and we find it difficult to overcome such perception biases.

Are we falling for the confirmation bias?

emotional abuse 5Often it happens that we tend to follow the confirmed pattern of life. A life that has been lived by our parents becomes one such confirmation bias. If we witnessed our father being rude to our mother or we saw the fights in the family while growing up, it becomes a pattern of life for us when we grow up. Unknowingly we end up indulging in to a similar kind of behavior with our kids and spouse whenever there happens to be a little stress in the family. You can fathom the intensity of the yearning for violence in the corona distress. We end up fighting each other rather than being with each other in these difficult times.

emotional abuse 4Similarly, it kind of becomes a pattern confirmation for the housewife too who after every banter from the husband would say,” He is like that only. Nothing can be done about him”.

Do you really think he is like that or that nothing can be done about him? Or is it that you are falling a victim to your own confirmation bias.

Are we falling for illusion of authority?

man-covering-his-girlfriends-mouth_13339-63733(1)It has generally been a belief over the ages that the male member of the family holds complete authority over all decisions concerning the children and wife because man was considered the bread earner. But do you as modern housewife would still subscribe to that theory. The illusion of authority needs to be broken with the realism of truth. Modern woman is no less placed in education, position and authority .You will help yourself and him by coming out of this illusion of authority.

How do we come out of these traps and spend better times in difficult period?

That’s a very obvious question.

stop-violence-against-women-concept-poster_37732-134woman-gesturing-no-stop-sign-pop-art-style-banner-dot-background_48369-13861Remember that we neither have to perpetrate violence nor do we have to take it. Take the first step to stop it. Tell the partner,”no more of this .If you do.  I will report. Raise your voice firmly without tears.

frustrated-young-woman-sitting-sofa-with-cleaning-equipments_23-2147916459kids-helping-cleaning-cartoon-poster_1284-20636Find total connectivity by involving children .In case of couple without kids find out what connects .It could be food, television, friends or plain small talk. Drop your biases and resentment. Drop remorse, instead bring about approach. Begin small, begin positive .Things will change.

domestic 5Express expected behavior from all by being specific during corona lockdown. Don’t just become a victim by owning up the entire household chorus. Call out for help from him and the children. Make them part of every work .Active mind and body will keep everyone away from resentments .Make a community at home helping each other .It can be a good beginning even in tough times.

family-kids-happy-people-46252Keep trying. Tomorrow will definitely be better than today but we all have to work for it. Make everyone do that by love affection and by being firm.Avoid emotional outbursts, rather take charge. Tame that beast now. You know you can do it .Kudos to you.

Do you think your spouse is depressed and want to know how to help

maxresdefaultWhen Deepti (name changed) had called on us the other day , she had wanted an appointment for her husband , who she thought had been suffering from depression for quite long time . I had advised her that she should accompany her husband to the counseling session. After a few sessions with both of them together and separately with each partner ,it emerged that both of them suffered from depression.Yet they have been in a denial mode.I have seen in many cases that partners refuse to believe that what they are suspecting others suffer from could also be happening to them .They would always believe that just because the other person is complaining he or she could be depressed.Deepti had faced similar situation when she had come to me.Explained Deepti,”my husband Sameer {name changed}blames me for the problems in our marriage. He says that we have all the problems in our relationship because I am depressed. He tells everyone in my family and his family that if my wife was not undergoing depression, there would not be any issues in our marriage. But on the contrary I believe it’s always my husband who suffers from depression. He always complains about everything and blames me unnecessarily when things do not workout as per his plans”.

Family therapist during meeting with unhappy, married couple

It is normal to have little bit difference of opinion in marital life but should each time difference arisen become the cause of a major fight then the husband wife team need to look at their status of their perceptual faculty. It is common to become little dejected after marital argument but to think of the other person being depressed definitely should be a cause of concern for the partners. It is very likely that both partners are perceiving some issues, concerns and a few problems in marriage negatively that has been giving depression to each other.Depression is made out to be a neurotic  disorder  hence people are always afraid of agreeing that they are undergoing such state of emotional upheaval. The usual response to such situation being.”I am o.k. it is the other person who seems to be suffering from depression”.

arguing coupleSomewhat similar is the story of Seema and Jatin (names changed) both budding doctors still in their process of setting up their household. The problem arose when a fine day Seema threatened to commit suicide on a very small whimsical issue. She had convinced herself that her husband does not pay her as much attention as he is giving to his other female colleagues in the hospital where he works . This came as a very major shock to Jatin. Jatin had nowhere ever thought about his coworkers in this manner. No amount of explanation could convince his wife and she continued to fight with him from time to time on the same subject forcing her husband to lead a solitary life away from the friends and acquaintances. What began as a depression with one of the spouses had pulled the other partner too into the same state of mind ,giving him depression. Jatin explains his situation in the following words,” My wife Seema has been idealising suicide from her college days. Our relationship dates back to seven years now. We had begun  dating in the first year of our college. In the college too she was always throwing tantrums on me.It is quite surprising that she acts in this manner only when I am around and with me only. She would often break up with me on small pretexts and remain incommunicado for days together. She  will come out of her shell on her own. She would then hardly remember that she has not been in touch with me for so many days. Everything becomes very normal for her soon , but it leaves me completely drained out emotionally.I can never discuss about such a behaviour of my wife to any one in the family or friends as she behaves normal in front of others.I do understand that she does it to gain my attention . For me she is my wife .I do give her the required love and affection. My whole life revolves around her . But I fail to understand why would she want me to be exclusively with her  only all the times. This kind of obsessive  behaviour from my wife has started telling on my professional responsibility. I can not be a doctor in such a big hospital where I am working by living in isolation and yet I do not know how to solve the problem. You being a psychologist could possibly understand the situation better and help us”.

A few sessions with the couple revealed that they both in spite of their long dating history had failed to emotionally connect with each other so far. Seema had wanted to make the emotional connection but had not understood how to proceed with it. She had always wanted to make Jatin part of her inner life. Each time she tried she sounded more pathetic and distressed and felt completely remorseful  when she did not get the desired attention and response from Jatin.

Jatin understood her well but he too could not connect with Seema. He did not know how to make her feel loved and understood. She just wanted him to love her and care about her. But her such behaviour had put  off Jatin, leaving him cold and at times uninterested in her .Both the partners had been frustrated and didn’t know how to handle such a situation.

psychologist-helping-couple-relationship-difficulties-office-49310915It has been observed by us that one partner in a marriage is depressed , the cause would always  be a marital situation  between the two spouses.  The solution to such a situation has to be found within the marriage situation only. There can be no solution by putting the onus to only one of the  members to the marriage, as the reason is not individual but a common factor is responsible for  whatever is happening to the spouses.

35127-dating-couple-1200In the event of either of you suffering from depression , both of you should help each other explore how your relationship dynamic could be  causing such a depression. Though you may want the other person to get individual treatment to his or her complaints by way of the intervention of a psychologist, it is in truth be your total marital situation that needs to be looked in a different perspective as different from your own point of view.  In such a situation you would do well to get your self assessed by our   professional family therapist and counselor. We will together then  work out a plan  that works to revive your marital relationship .Always remember that  you both are equal partners to the happiness and bliss of your marriage and hence let us find the way to the resolution of the differences in marriage too together with each partner respecting and trusting the other equally.
